Talk over lunch turned to reminiscing about dress-up days at primary school. Of course, being Oz, there's no Halloween, so we have to make up other excuses to paint our faces. One such time was the day my school had a 'Letter S' day. You could come as anything that started with an 'S'. Sportspeople, stars, suns, snowmen, santa... you get the picture.
What did I come dressed as.... ? SEAWEED!
My mother, in a stroke of madness, cut a big green garbage bag into long strips and then attached them to a t-shirt. Unfortunately, that was actually the best costume she ever made.
| escapist: | (noun) A person who escapes into a world of fantasy. |
| Synonyms: | wishful thinker, dreamer |
| Usage: | She calls herself a mere optimist, but we believe her unconditionally sunny outlook makes her an escapist. |
My mother has an unhealthy obsession with microwaves. There are many
traits that I have inherited from her and I sincerely hope that isn't
one of them. The day Dad first brought home a microwave oven, we spent
an hour trying to microwave popcorn. The first twenty or so times we
attempted it, smoke spewed from the microwave and the popcorn ended up
fused into a great lump of charcoal. None of us seemed capable of
grasping the concept that it could be cooked in 2 minutes. Needless to
say, there's probably little chance of a future Nobel prize winner
coming out of my family's gene pool. Mum finally crossed the line the
day she decided it was a a bit cold and microwaved the salad she had
just prepared us for dinner. It didn't actually taste that bad, but it
was scary how dependent she was becoming on that little appliance.

Tuesday, feelin' great, 28!

It is this kind of weather that makes me wish for a pedicure. It also
makes me wish I was in St Barts and was Kate Moss, but there are some
things that are achievable and some that aren't, so a pedi will
suffice, for now. That and a pair of oh-so-boho thongs and I can always
pretend I suppose.
Which cartoon character best represents you?

Well I would luv to say Aeon Flux.

At the back of a yard, not yours and not ours
Lived a bed-full of raggedy, half-dying flowers
For it’d been more than three months and a quarter
Since Mad Jack McCann had bothered to water.
Now that might not have been so cruel or so painful
If the season was one that was good for some rainfall
But this was the height of a terrible drought
As those raggedy flowers were now finding out.
I attended the book launch of The Thirsty Flowers yesterday. I must say that fairy bread and champagne work a treat together. Oh sometimes I feel a bit Peter Pan-ish... I'm the girl that never grew up. The book is really lovely, lots of great pictures. What could possibly be more entertaining than a picture book about thirsty flowers, I hear you ask? Well, not much, apart from perhaps this little gem someone sent me from The Age website over the weekend: 'The Walt Disney Co. yesterday said it took "appropriate action" against employees at its Paris theme park who were caught simulating sex while dressed as Disney characters. The video shows Minnie Mouse struggling to free herself as she is grabbed from behind by Goofy and then a giant snowman.' Now if that doesn't cheer you up for the week, nothing will.
Show us some concert photos.

Tuesday, deliciously sunny, 23C

The discussion on the radio this morning centred around Australia's obsession with big things. [The big things are a collection of sculptures of smaller objects that somehow relate to the area in which they are built]. There are a HUGE number of them.. including, the big worm, the big advocado, the big beer can, the big mango...
Does any other country in the world have big things like this? It's a little weird really, but I am a massive fan of the big things. For me, many childhood holidays involved the long and arduous drive from Melbourne to Queensland and I have many great memories of stopping in the middle of nowhere to gaze with wonder at a large fibreglass structure of a prawn, banana, merino (sheep) or whatever that particular town happened to be obsessed with. I've often wondered how the craze for big objects started. Why as a nation have we found it necessary to build these monuments?
If I had to pick a favourite it would be the big pineapple. There's something about the shape of pineapples that is very satisfying.
"Lo, your head looks just like a pineapple".
Heeeee! So, you're a fugger, too. I knew there was something about you I liked. Ahem. Many things, of course. read more
